The NZ Section of Appita has 200 members, with representation from all the NZ pulp and paper mills, suppliers to the industry, consultants, and research organisations.
It is a very active section. The year starts with a “Welcome to the NZ Pulp & Paper Industry” afternoon in February or March. The aim of the event is to give newcomers to the industry a chance to gain an overview of the NZ Pulp & Paper Industry, network with fellow newcomers and get an introduction to Appita and its membership. This session is provided by Appita as a service to the industry, and there is no charge to participate. Six or seven dinner and technical meetings are held a year. These include annual joint meetings with Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) local chapter and the New Zealand Institute of Forestry (NZIF). The meetings are normally held in Rotorua, although there is also an annual meeting in Eastern Bay and a yearly field trip.
The NZ Section New Speakers’ Competition is held each year, and this is always a popular event. The Competition is for members who have not previously made a formal presentation to an industry peer audience outside their own company. The winner of the NZ Section Competition goes onto compete against the Australian winner at the annual Appita conference.
NZ Section activities are organised by the Section Committee, which is made up of representatives from companies involved in the NZ pulp and paper industry, and includes members from the mills, suppliers, consultants and research organisations. The Committee is continuously looking at new ways for Appita to support and promote the pulp and paper industry, as well as serve as a provider of ideas for training and networking opportunities.
