Experiences gained during the last 25 years in Nordic mills indicate that main causes for long, unplanned outages in recovery boilers are leaks leading to smelt-water explosions and corrosion damages due to internal deposits and low quality boiler water. Cases of such incidents are presented, and ways how such incidents can be prevented are discussed.
